But on the final stretch of the Estoril Portugal XPD Race it were the British Helly Hansen – Prunesco that stormed in for the title. The best Portuguese team finished at Baleal in 23rd place.

After 128 hours of non-stop progression and over 900Kms run on foot, mountain-bike and kayak, the 2009 Adventure Racing World Cup -Estoril Portugal XPD Race turned out to be the supreme challenge to resistance and strategy. Out of the 59 teams coming from 25 different countries that left Estoril on Sunday 8th November, only 40 were able to classify, representing a rather low withdrawal rate, considering the length and the harshness of the track.

Requiring an extreme endurance capacity, this four member team challenge (of which at least one must be a woman) set out searching for the most astonishing landscapes in the country. Starting at the Estoril coast and taking the caravan out to explore the tracks of Lousã, Açor, Estrela, São Mamede and Aire e Candeeiros mountains. Along the way, the river Zêzere, the Natural Parks of International Tejo and the Castelo de Bode dam. After swimming across the Óbidos lagoon, the finish line was set on the beach at Baleal, where the last survivors arrived on foot and mountain bike during the morning.

Averaging 37, the British of “Team Helly Hansen-Prunesco” surprised everybody with a vigorous final sprint and conquered their first world title in adventure racing. Team leader Tom Gibbs – an Airbus designer – revealed the team's strategy; “We came to Portugal with no major expectations and therefore put little pressure on the team. Our strategy turned out fine and it was all decided on the final hours of the race”. North-Americans “Nike/Beaver Creek” finished 2nd and Swedish “Lundhags Adventure” in 3rd with a small difference.

Far behind the leaders most were aiming only to reach the finish line. José Marques, leader of the best national team (Extreme Challenge/IGeoE - 23rd place) was content with the result; “The team We worked well as a team even in the most difficult moments. We could have done better as we were close to Top 10 for a while, but fatigue caused a navigation error that cost us 3 long and unrecoverable hours. Even so, we are happy and shall do our best to be there for the next world cup”

lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: arial">The year 2009 was marked by economic crisis. The organization felt its effects and the teams did too. Along the year there were ups and downs, and there were times of discouragement when the economic situation did not seem to help, but the World Championship of Racing Adventure 2009 began this morning unshaken by crisis.

Just two hours ago, at 10 o'clock,, between morning drizzle, started the most international championship that ever occur.

In the gardens of Casino Estoril we could find ourselves among various flags from lots of different countries, hear lots of languages and realize that the world of adventure racing is growing up and that the fans could not help come to Portugal, either to be in the race, help the organization, or just see it along the way.

At present, 59 teams from 26 countries are already on the streets of Cascais practising a multi-sport score orienteering activity. Those with whom we spoke felt excited to be in the most important event of the year, some even felt nervous, but all hoping to find the best of Portugal and of themselves. This race will be a real test of the teams’ limits and their capacity for strategic planning.

Anyone who has participated in adventure races in Portugal knows that strategy here is very important, and at the briefing yesterday night, everyone realized that to win the race you must purchase the bonus checkpoints and make sure that you don't miss the cut offs, so at this point it’s very difficult to predict a winner. The champions of ARWC 2008, Orionhealth.com, have had an incredible journey up the world championships: in 2005 were in the 11th place, in 2006 in the 5th, in 2007 in the 3rd, and last year achieved the first place, but this year, in the Portuguese race they will find a very strong competition and it will be difficult to keep the title.

The best teams in the world are in the Portugal at this exact moment giving their best to win the race, and will not make it easy for the Orionhealth.com to maintain the title.

This race will for sure be one of the most exciting ever; we will continue to follow it on line here at the official site.

Rita Deodato

Multisport Mayhem in Cascais

In showery weather the racers gathered outside the Estoril Casino (famous as the inspiration of Casino Royale) for the 10.00 start of ARWC2009 ...

Full text: http://www.sleepmonsters.com/racereport.php?race_id=7511

Follow My Team!!!

We just launch the new functionality "Follow My Team" that I believe will give you a great experience following the race and your favourite team.

The complete route, including all checkpoints, will be over 900 km and they are glad to decided to explore Lusitanea and present everybody with such a challenge!

The landscape is beautiful, the terrain is tricky and in some parts physically demanding, in others it’s a complete “nightmare” and your resilience will be tested to the limits. However, they designed the race to allow all the Teams to reach the finish line and enjoy the journey over the Land of Light. For the winners they promise the challenge of the year, with a very demanding course with increasing difficulty towards the end. This difficulties varies along the way from Physical at the beginning to Technical at the end. A strong fight all over the race is predicted by the organizers with TOP places varying depending on the strategy for the Bonus Check Points (CP\'s) collection and for the rest stops.

Like in the previous editions of Estoril Portugal XPD the race was designed to offer the racers the best available territory for Adventure Race in the Lusitanea area and to help everybody to discover many of Portugal natural and cultural heritage, ranging from the Jurassic era to the Paleolithic, Roman, Arabic, Medieval and Modern times. This edition will have CP\'s in Dinosaurs Monuments, in Stone Age Sanctuaries, in Roman Gold Mines, in Moorish Fortresses, in Templar strongholds, in Medieval Bridges, Churches and Castles and in the new Wind Power Generators.

Wild life will surround teams all over the territory; they will paddle with eagles and vultures, biking with wild boars and bulls, hiking with deer and snakes which will make this expedition really natural. The race will pass many Natural Parks and protected areas which implies an “eco friendly” attitude from the racers and organizers to minimize any negative impacts to the ecosystems.

Again the main question all teams should address in this race is Management: How can we manage to do it all? The race is planned to give the “trophy” to the faultless options; thus good judgement, focus and teamwork will be decisive to overcome the challenges of the course. Sleep and rest stops will be crucial to assure good judgement in route choice and strategic decisions. The weather conditions are also a crucial factor which we took in consideration for the route layout. For instance, sunny days will speed teams in some places and almost dehydrate them in others; this implies the need of a careful choice and decision in all occasions, specially in the mountains. Fortunately, teams will find always simple solutions, like small country roads which will speed you up to the next Transition Area (the cut offs with shortcuts are an example of that principle).

The equipment requirements are balanced between safety and comfort and the organisation will not force teams to carry heavy packs unless it will be strictly necessary. Climbing gear and wet suits will be carried just in the sections required and they will be picked and dropped in specific places all along the way. The recommended places to sleep are the Assistance Areas but many comfortable places can be found all along the way, namely in some of the transition zones. For the meals the organizers recommend to explore the flavours of the Portuguese “cuisine” as teams will cross many small villages with typical taverns and pastry shops.

Most important at this time is to prepare for the challenge and after analysing the data presented in the ARWC Portugal 2009 Provisional Technical Data Sheet (Info Bulletin nº4), one can find all the results extracted from the organizers visit trips and testing. The average speed estimated for the whole race is 8,4 km/h, which in their opinion allows any of the top World Teams to complete the full race (CP’s and bonus CP’s), nevertheless the technicalities involved in navigation, particularly at night, will require acute precision and focus, which implies the teams would need to rest several times along the way to minimise the errors. Because time management is so crucial, there will be some compulsory stops to allow some race protocols regarding Sport Ident data collection, Press Flash Interviews, GPS System downloads and battery check and Medical Checks.

From the data available is possible to verify that around 39% of the predicted time the teams will be walking /running, 41% biking, 18% paddling and 1% skating which indicates that attention should be paid to the feet and their condition along the route. Other interesting data extracted from the race statistics are the maximum speeds for Mountain Biking, 11,75 km\\h, for Roller-Blade\\ TRIKKE, 21,7 km\\h, for Trekking 5,5 km\\h and for Paddling 6,3 km\\h. The longest section has 160 km and it’s a MTB section and the shortest is an easy 5,3 km trekking section. Mountain biking has the largest share of the 907 km with more than 57 % (MTB and O-MTB) of the total racing distance.

The maps that will be used this year are from the Portuguese Military Maps (1:25 000) and we will use the scale 1:50 000 for the paddling sections. We will use also Orienteering maps for more precise navigation. Examples of the map legend will be send to the teams along with an extract of similar areas in the three formats we will be using (1:20 000, 1:25 000 and 1:50 000).

The final piece of information released is the race scheme (Info Bulletin nº3) that provides for the full picture of the route and identifies the sequence of the sections and the location of the Transition /Assistance along the five stages of the race.

Please stay tune for more details in the coming days,

The route of the World Cup is complete. As first information to whet your appetite we present you the general details of the race that transmit perfectly the huge challenge that we propose to you.

The maximum duration of the race will be 127 hours to cover a maximum distance (best option) of about 910 km. The race will consist of 5 stages with 21 sections, the major stage will have 242 km and the smaller 60 km.

Its also important to highlight the existence of 5 mountain bike shortcuts design to allow all teams in difficulty to easily reach the finish line. These shortcuts have a total of 136 km and will, on many occasions, allow the slower teams to recover the pace and come forward.

The characterization of the various stages will take place during this week, referring to all the technical data of the various sections and alternatives, referring to the number of CPs, the altimetry and the difficulties of the terrain. Will also describe the activities used to overcome the route obstacles and their degrees of difficulty.

Its important to note that the arrival of the race for the winners, is scheduled for Saturday morning, 14th which will force to change the Race Final Program, which will be published in the coming days.

Best wishes,

It will be Monday 27.09, that the organization will begin the dissemination of the technical data of the race testing.

For now, we can anticipate that the race will have 5 stages with 21 sections and will have several alternative routes that will help all the teams coming to the end of the longest and most demanding Adventure Race of the Iberian Peninsula - The 7th World Championship Racing Adventure Portugal 2009.

Compared to the teams present, we should mention that this is the strongest Championship ever and we believe that everything will be decided in the last section of the race. The level of the challenges present in the race will naturally enforce that. We also, premiere a new sport in Adventure Racing, which for now is still secret, but that certainly will provide hilarious moments to athletes and the public.

Regarding the international dissemination, we can already tell that the event will have global coverage through a number of television channels with a potential estimated of 1000 million spectators.

They are good,
The news of the Land of Light,
After many uncertainties and a reasonable despair here we are touching the critical mark of success - Fifty international teams.
If somebody six months ago, in the middle of the depression, told us that we will reach 50 teams by the end of regular registration period we for sure would smiled with a nervous tone and we would say something to disguise the fact that we were at the edge of a very high cliff.

But we are adventure racers ourselves, so reaching the finish line is our lighthouse and the wish to always improve our fuel. Thus, against all odds we maintained course and today we can say that we prevail by managing to join together the most complete and competitive start list of the planet.

The seventh edition of the Adventure Racing World Championship in Portugal will be, with any doubt, the most disputed ever with the presence of almost all the TOP THREE TEAMS from the World Series.

Time will judge our capacity and the one of the teams to fully withstands the challenges of the race in The Land of Light, our amazing Lusitanea.
Thirty-one (31) teams constitutes the first batch that will be joined, in the coming days, by more twenty-nine (29) who are now concluding the final steps of the registration protocol. The organization still considers whether or not, to extend the final list to sixty-five (65). However a final decision will only be taken if that enlargement contributes to the elevation of the quality of the competition.

In the meanwhile, still some doubts remains about the participation of several renowned international teams that have contact APCA but did not yet found the necessary sponsoring to attend the race in Portugal. In that lot are the team NIKE of USA, the team Wilsa Helly-Hensen of France and team Salomon Santiveri of Spain. Nevertheless, the top Ukrainian team OS-Direct Adventure, one of the most powerful formations of Eastern Europe was the last team to apply for a place and are highly motivated to come to Portugal and show all their racing potential.

From the international AR scene, should be noted the participation of several ARWC09 teams in some of the major Raids in August; examples are Team Orion Health-NZ and Team nuun-Feed The Machine-US who are participating in Primal Quest-Badlands USA and the well known rivals AlpinePro/Nutrend/Merida-CZ and OpavaNet/Tilak/Merida-CZ who will fight for victory at its homeland Raid, the Czech Adventure Race 2009. The Czech event will also have the participation of Team OS-Direct Adventure-AU and SWECO Karlstad Multisport-SW, two teams On hold in the ARWC list.

The final notes goes to the new ARWC page in FACEBOOK who got an immense response from the AR community and got almost 90 members in just over 10 days. The average of 9 fans per day in this early date suggests that this will be an exceptional communication tool for the next few months. The Twitter ARWC2009 also started this weekend and already has a group of loyal followers that will surely increase in coming weeks.

Please stay tune to more upcoming news in a very special month for the ARWC Portugal 2009.
In fact, our previsions indicated a clear advantage to the American teams in their soil but we forgot how near the race was from the border with Canada.

The rain that pour prior to the race changed very much the race conditions - very heavy terrain and very strong currents were the two main obstacles the racers had to face and the two canadian teams overcame it without mistakes.

From the race reports was clear that after the paddling cut off, where the two teams manage to be isolated in the lead, that only in extremely difficult circumstances the canadians would loose the race. That give them an extra amount of energy which proved to be efficient for the final scoring. Nevertheless is important to note the extreme effort done by the thirds - Berlin Bike/ Eastern Mountain Sports and Team NYARA who also plan to be present in November for the World Championship.

With the closure of ARWS Untamed New England the process of qualification for the World Championship ends, which means that in the next few weeks the organization will announce the final accepted teams for ARWC Portugal 2009 - The Adventure of a Life Time in Lusitanea.
In the Monster race the victory smiled to the strongest team of all, Lundhags. They took the lead for almost all the race and they win with a comfortable two hours lead over FJS.

Among the TOP TEN finnishers in Sweden, we find seven teams that will compete in the ARWC Portugal 2009 next November - apart from Lundhags Adventure who won, we find in third place Speleo Salomon Gore-Tex from Poland, in fourth place Team SOLE Herkules from US and Sweden, in sixth team EXPLORE from Sweden, in seventh Adventure Team Finland, in eighth team Helly Hensen UK and finally in tenth our good friend Maria Plyshechko running with the Russian team DenSurka.Ru.

That\'s really good news for the World Champs who will this year have the strongest line up ever in Adventure Racing history.

From across the Atlantic the fight is on, with the two Canadian teams - ATP/ Salomon and Mundial Saint-Raymond leading the first day of the race with the experient US team Merrell/Zanfel Adventure close by. The 43 teams present have clearly different ambitions with the pack spreading out in different sections along the day: the Estoril Portugal XPD is clearly taking a vacation time of the hard work of preparation of November migthy challenge ;););) .
In fact, results from the new Google feature (Analytics) show that in one month, 1323 users of the site were more than 115 hours (accumulated) reviewing about 12,708 pages.

It is clear from the analysis that a significant part of the visits (31%) are to the site entrance page whose contents satisfies the imediate need for information of the visitors, however it is important to note that the remaining 69% of the visits are very significant. On average these visitors consults 4.56 pages during 4:38, which gives about one minute per page visit which demonstrates that the density of information is appropriate and fixed the attention of users.

Another very important information we got from the report is the enormous geographical dispersion of the visits with 2,4 inhabitants per city of origin (554 from 69 countries). These numbers demonstrates that at this stage the visitors of the site are mainly the leaders of Adventure Racing teams who has an interest in evaluating a possible participation or the visitors are members of the 68 teams already registered.

Other important information that we have observed, is that the origin of the visitors is mainly by direct access to the web site which shows that they already know the address and this is the result of the only active publicity we developed at this stage which is the sending of the newsletters to the national and international databases of the Portuguese Association of Adventure Racing.

Finally is important to inform everybody that is available to the teams and public a copy of the full report of the analysis of the functioning of the ARWC Portugal 2009 website from 28, May - 27, June 2009. (Analytics Report).
In a very difficult race, who was considerably shortened due to heavy rainfall, team Lima Salomon from Slovenia, manage to secure a short lead ( 10 min) over the two famous and strong Chezc contenders - AlpinePro/ Nutrend/ Merida and OpavaNet/ Tilak /Merida who score the second and third places. The four place was obtained by our Polish friends from Navigator who manage a joint venture with UK athletes.
But Slovenia and its beautiful mountains were not the only stage were ARWC Portugal 2009 teams were tested, last week in the border of Russia and Finland another race from AREuroseries give a podium to the Russian Female team ARENA-Craft who score a fantastic second place. Team Karlstad Multisport from Sweden did not manage to finish the grueling Red Fox Race but use some of the last bike as part of training to next November.
The total supremacy of CP Armada in 2008 who won in both categories, mixed and male teams was this year beaten by the Portuguese Army Mixed Team who manage to win with a comfortable advantage over the rest of the pack.
From the scarce informations we got is possible to conclude that was a very demanding race, with very difficult night sections where the physical condition and the resistance were tested to the limit and proved essential for the final outcome.

As final results for the podium we got:

Mixed Elite

1st - Exercito Português 1 (40 CPs) - National Champions 2009,
2nd - Clube Aventura do Barreiro (35 CPs),
3rd - Desnivel (27 CPs),

Male Elite

1st - Clube Praças da Armada/ 9A (51 CPs - 22:16) - National Champions 2009,
2nd - Vulcano Mix (49 CPs - 22:13),
3rd - Azoia Masculina (37 CPs),

Adventure Category

1st - Exercito Português 2 (50 CPs),
2nd - Rafting Atlântico (45 CPs),
3rd - Vulcano 1 (34 CPs),

The Estoril XPD Team, organizers of the ARWC Portugal 2009, were present to promote the Championship among the Portuguese racers and fans and according to them the Extreme Challenger results gives a very good indications about the level of preparation of the Portuguese teams for the November World Champs.

The Raid had 510 km in a very difficult terrain in the Maritime Alps and was won in 130h 10m, having as highlights the improving of the teams Planete Tonique - Acti 4 and ISSY Aventure - Leodis in the ARWS Rankings (both pass to criteria iii) which means that they are practically selected for the ARWC Portugal 2009. It was bad luck to our Czech friends of Alpine Pro who just lost the last spot by just few minutes.

For the moment the organization is opening a wait list and debating whether or not to extend the entries to more 10 or 15 teams, nevertheless the decision will always account for the negative impacts for both the ecosystems of Natural Parks and the safety of the racers.

Other important aspects that will shape the final entry list are linked to the qualification criteria (http://www.arwcportugal2009.com/en/teams.php) and to the results of the remaining Adventure Racing World Series Qualifiers, with Raid In France just beginning in the French Alps and \"Riviera\".
